One of the most basic methods of keeping your septic system in shape is to reduce the amount of water that you use. There are several different ways to conserve water, and the more the merrier.

A common problem which people encounter is tree roots creeping into their systems. Large trees planted to close to the septic system can cause serious damage and need to be removed. It is good to keep trees at least 100 feet away for your septic system.

Be mindful of what items you are flushing down your toilet. You cannot treat the toilet as a garbage disposal. Things like cat litter, napkins, and paper towels should never be flushed since it can result in clogging.

Make sure that your garbage disposal works well. A garbage disposal that does not full break up solids into tiny pieces is going to damage your septic system in the long run. It is imperative that you purchase a top line garbage disposal in order to reduce the amount of solids that go into your septic system.

Never pour grease or hazardous waste down your drains. The grease will build up on the drainfields, making it nearly impossible for liquids to get through. Hazardous chemicals such as motor oils are bad for you system and will eventually run into the groundwater.

You should never drive or build structure over your drainfield. Liquids need to be able reach the drainfield for it to properly function. Do not even plant grass on your drainfield since this can lead to soil erosion.
